The Freedom of Information Act
In 1966 Congress enacted the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). It was designed to give Americans greater access to the records of the federal government. Since then, Congress has expanded the Act to include electronic records and files. You don’t have to file a FOIA request to obtain information that is customarily found in the public domain. These may include such records as legal filings and petitions, broadcast applications, petitions for rulemakings and more. To learn more, see 47 C.F.R. §0.453 and §0.455.
