Structured settlements

Structured settlements are legal settlements paid out over time, typically as an annuity rather than a lump sum. Courts and insurance companies award these settlements for a wide range of claims, and they can be held in a self-directed IRA if they meet custodial and IRS requirements.

To include structured settlements in your STRATA IRA:

  • The settlement must meet IRS and custodial requirements.

  • Documentation is required to establish the terms and payment schedule.

  • Once approved, payments are directed into your IRA on the agreed schedule.

Futures

Futures are standardized contracts to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price on a specified future date. In a self-directed IRA, certain futures contracts that meet custodial and IRS requirements can be included.

Key points:

  • Can provide exposure to commodities, indexes, or currencies.

  • Must be traded through a registered futures commission merchant (FCM) approved by STRATA.

  • Requires adherence to IRS and custodial guidelines.

  • You’ll first establish and fund your STRATA IRA, then open a trading account with an approved FCM. Once funded, you or your designated futures professional (CTA, Introducing Broker, etc.) will place trades through the FCM.
